This is because according to popular legend, Ganga
descended on earth at this time. She was initially
reluctant to come down from heaven but the meditation of
Bhagiratha compelled her to do so.
Description :
This is essentially a bathing festival. During this
period, people take a dip in the holy river to cleanse
themselves of all their sins. It is believed that the pure
waters of the Ganges can wash off all your sins.
People meditate on the banks of the River Ganges. In the
evening, lamps are floated and devotional songs are sung.
The clay is taken home and so is the holy water. The water
has power to sanctify your home.
Time for celebrating :
This festival starts on the tenth day of Jaishtha
according to the Hindu calendar. It corresponds to the
month of June. It begins on the Amavasya night (dark moon
night) and continues till dasami tithi or the tenth phase
of the moon.
